The purpose of the Point-In-Time Count is to count the literally homeless in our communities. We count to understand the needs of individuals sleeping outside, or other places not meant for human habitation. Ideally, the count involves a brief interview conducted by volunteers to ask basic information, and to ask where they intend to sleep for the night. Our volunteers will also offer them food and basic necessities.
Homeless services are limited in the counties we serve, and although PIT counts are done annually throughout the country, we have traditionally only counted those who are actually provided services on the date of the count. To fully understand the extent of the problem, the Center for Community Action hopes to increase our ability to see the extent of homelessness through the help of volunteers from any organization that works in the community with distressed individuals and families.
